For the first installment of Rep Worthy, I'm taking a look at the thought provoking podcast between Joe Rogan and Naval Ravikant where they discuss a variety of interesting topics including: keys to living a good life, artificial intelligence, meditation, universal basic income, and getting you rich.
I would just like to add that some of these quotes are not direct and have been paraphrased.
It's like if you go to a circus and see a bear. It's kind of interesting but not that much. If you see a unicycle, that's interesting; but if you see a bear on a unicycle, that's really interesting.
When you combine things you're not supposed to combine, people get interested.
At some level all humans are broad; we're multivariate but we get summarized in pithy ways.
Every human is capable of every experience and every thought.
You've got one life, just do everything you're going to do.
New paths and scaling mountains
When climbing mountains, it can be very painful to go back down and look for a new path but that may be the best thing to do.
If you get enough advice, it all cancels to zero.
You want to be rich and anonymous; not poor and famous.
If you have something original or interesting to say, you should say it. Otherwise, it's probably been said better.
The impacts of good decision making are much higher than they used to be because now you can influence 1000s or millions of people through your decisions (or your code).
Machines should be working 9 to 5. Humans are not meant to work 9 to 5.
Renting out time
You're not going to get rich renting out your time.
To me, the test of any good system is: you build a system, hand it over to your enemies to run for the next decade.
If all of your beliefs line up into one political party, you're not a clear thinker.
If all of your beliefs are the same as your neighbors and your friends, you're not a clear thinker.
Turn it off
Everyone's trying to program everybody. The only solution is to turn it off.
[On meditation] Instead of paying a therapist to sit there and listen to you, you're listening to yourself.
There comes a day and you realize the only things you're thinking about are things that happened yesterday.
And that's when meditation starts.
Peace is happiness at rest; and happiness is peace in motion.
If you're a peaceful person, anything you do will be a happy activity.
It's easier to change yourself than to change the world.
When you're memorizing it's an indication that you don't understand.
Let's get you rich first.
That's the fundamental delusion: That there is something out there that will make me happy and fulfilled forever.
There is. It's called death.
Retirement is when you stop sacrificing today for some imaginary tomorrow.
Your real resume, is just a catalog of all of your suffering.
[On wanting to sound smart] Would I still be interested in learning this thing if I couldn't ever tell anybody about it?
Everything you're a winner at now in life, it's because you were a loser at some point.
You're never going to be worth more than what you think you're worth.
It looks like work to them, but feels like play to me. That's how I know noone can compete with me on it.
This quote was actually said by Confucius but as Naval put it's "one of those book dropping lines."
Every man has two lives, and the second starts when he realizes he has just one.
